Value at Risk
AKA The Three Killer Questions
This is one of our most used ‘Brain Hacks’, because it is effective.
It is designed to help stakeholders and others understand the value at risk due to behavioural risks. It works on many levels including:
Reframing stakeholders perceptions of the risk
Quantifying or ‘priming’ stakeholders with a value at risk
Establishing the leading indicators of risk
It is an effective mirror, and may lead to your stakeholders realising that this project is going to be tougher than they have the conviction and energy for, or that the value expectations are unrealistic.
When to use it: Early and Often.
How to use it: Deploy to stakeholders, then debrief
The Science
This uses a deliberate three step science informed process.
Step 1: The Easy Yes
Used by Dale Carnegie in his 1929 book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, he noticed that if he got people saying Yes early in a conversation they were more open to persuasion. If you say No, it can cause our brains to treat it like a threat, and become defensive.
Step 2: Prime the Value
This uses the IKEA bias to invest energy in calculating the value at risk, based on a simple calculation of a percentage, which is based on ‘gut feel’, and the value in the business case. The result is ‘primed’ and shaped as the value at risk
Step 3: The ‘killer’ question.
Most changes fail due to willingness to adopt, not the ability. This simple question tests for the importance of this change to your organisation.
