Will Autonomous companies be a thing

Can an organisation become truly autonomous? At the Gartner conference in Barcelona, they predict that by 2035, at least one major industry will be led by an autonomous business. In their research paper, they believe that, by 2030, machine customers could drive or influence $18 trillion in purchases.

We often run a 'Blue Sky' exercise with our strategy clients, starting with a blank sheet of paper we build the organisation they would build as an upstart competitor, with the knowledge they have now, and with what they believe of the future.

Our aim us to wire their brains to think like a competitor, and to see the weaknesses and strengths in their organisation. It feels as though every organisation is, or will, need to, do something similar.

Is it time to 'Blue Sky' your organisation?

In reality, most big organisations are messy when you look inside, like the cupboard that you know you should clear out with broken hockey sticks and odd pots of paint.

The competition is likely to come from those without the baggage of the past. If it was me, I would set up a team to create a blue sky version of the mothership, small, nimble, unencumbered, give them 3 months and see what they come up with. It will surprise you.
