Utah tests AI for autonomous prescription renewals
A first in the medical field, the State of Utah is giving patients with chronic conditions a faster, automated way to renew medications.
It enables an AI system, provided by Doctronic to legally participate in medical decision-making for prescription renewals, an emerging model that could reshape access to care and ultimately improve care outcomes.
Medication noncompliance is one of the largest drivers of preventable health outcomes and avoidable medical spending. Prescription renewals account for roughly 80% of all medication activity.
Utah and Doctronic will test how autonomous AI closes gaps in access, reduces delays that lead to medication lapses, and improves outcomes.
The system covers 191 drugs, including blood pressure medications, birth control, and SSRIs. Off limits are pain management, ADHD treatments, and injectables.
When tested against 500 urgent care cases, AI's decisions aligned with doctors' 99% of the time. Edge cases are rerouted to human doctors.
At $4 a refill, the low cost to deliver is creating wide interest in other states.
